The wildlife
of Thwaite Common

Swallows and swifts nesting
in the barn, barn owls,
orchids on the Common...

Thwaite Common

A County Wildlife Site, the common is noted for its wild flowers, which have benefited from generations of grazing by livestock.

Barn owls, little owls, bullfinches, meadow pipits and skylarks are resident all year. Summer migrants include at least 8 different warblers as well as cuckoos and even the occasional quail or hobby. Swallows, swifts and wrens all nest regularly in the barn.

John Snape, a wildlife film-maker, has used these birds as the subject of one of his films which are shown and sold in the region.

In the damper parts of the common orchids are prolific and 5 ponds ensure a healthy population of amphibians.

Beaches

From the vast panorama of Holkham beach in the West to the silver sands of Sea Palling in the East, 30 miles of the coastline is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You can choose to walk in solitude to Blakeney Point to see the nesting terns and seal colonies or enjoy the Edwardian seaside atmosphere of Sheringham, Cromer and Overstrand where fishing boats are regularly hauled ashore by ancient rusting tractors.

The Countryside

This is a region of contrasting landscapes The rare lowland heaths between Horsford and Holt with their specialist plants, reptiles and butterflies, ancient woodlands, meadows and marshes. The great country estates like Blickling, Holkham, Houghton and Mannington are managed with high standards of conservation. Its owners are proud of Norfolk's enviable reputation as the number one county for rare birds. Norfolk Wildlife Trust, the oldest wildlife trust in the country, owns or manages over 50 nature reserves. Of these, the most popular has always been Cley Marshes on the North Coast. The recently opened CleyVisitor Centre has proved to be a huge success offering spectacular views of vast flocks of waders and other birds over the marshes.

broads

The Broads

In the East of the county are the famous broads which are home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Take a boat trip on Norfolk Wildlife Trust's Hickling Broad and climb the tree tower to see purple hairstreak butterflies in the oak leaves with an unforgettable all round panorama of this unique wilderness.

And of course, almost wherever you look, there is an abundance of churches to remind visitors of the unrivalled wealth and craftmanship of medieval Norfolk.
No wonder that so many artists and writers choose to live in this serenely beautiful region.
